7 sod laying mistakes to avoid for optimal grass growth

If you don’t lay your sod the right way, your sod is going to struggle to take root and flourish in your Florida lawn in the way it’s capable of. Here is a useful list of sod laying mistakes you can avoid to set your new sod up for optimal growth.

1. Not removing your old grass

Before you lay sod, you need to get rid of your old turf. Try to do this a few weeks before your DIY sod laying project. Doing this will help prevent wild grass from coming through.

2. Mowing too soon

We get it, long grass can drive some crazy, but mowing your sod too soon can damage your sod. That’s why it’s so important to wait about 3 weeks to mow for the first time and allow it to root properly.

3. Overlapping

It’s tempting to overlap sod to ensure even coverage, but in the end you will only give you a higher chance of an uneven lawn. Make sure you’re laying your sod without any gaps. This will ensure you have a smooth, even lawn.

4. Wrong time of year

While sod can be laid any time of year, there are times of year that are going to be more beneficial than others, especially here in the hot, humid Dunedin or Tarpon Springs Florida area. For the best chances of your sod taking root, try to plant your sod in the spring or summer.

5. Letting your sod sit too long

Once your sod is delivered, you only have about 1-2 days to install. Waiting too long will dry your sod out. If you can, try to store your sod in a cool, shady place so it doesn’t overheat and crack.

6. Not preparing properly

Making sure you’re ready for your sod install is imperative to growth and survival.
